About Us
How We Met
Considering our history, it's quite amazing that Andrew and I ever met. I was born in Iowa City, Iowa, in the fall of 1983 – Andrew in March, 1984, in
Rochester MN. Due to various events, my family and I migrated up to Minnesota and settled in Rochester by 1985. Although we were in the same town,
it would obviously be many years before we would meet.
Both of us attended different elementary schools, lived in different neighborhoods, etc. By middle school our paths might have crossed,
as we attend the same school, but I doubt we would have noticed each other. Being 6 months older, and a grade ahead, I never had any
contact with him, although we might have crossed paths in the hallway or lunch room. When Andrew was in 6th grade he and his family
moved to California. Amazingly, a year later, they returned to Rochester.
Skip forward a couple of years to high school. Andrew and I attended the same high school (go Spartans!) and were involved in band. The high
school band was a combined 10th-12th grade group that was extremely tight-knit. We became friends and enjoyed spending time together at
practice and at games – we also ended up sharing a lot of the same friends. When I was in 11th grade (Andrew in 10th), we shared a math
class together. We became closer friends in this class and we spent quite a bit of time together. However, I should note at this time,
Andrew could (and did) drive me absolutely crazy! (Sometimes he still does!). He would always be talking in class and joking around
constantly. He tried to steal my notes for history class – of course I wouldn't give them to him – and he was always taking my hard earned
'good job' stickers from my tests and papers. By the years end we were great friends, but nothing more.
At the end of the summer before my senior year, I got invited to a BBQ-party hosted by Andy. During the party we had a great time, we joked
around and he taught me how to play pool. A couple weeks later during summer band practice, we went out to lunch together nearly every day.
When school started, I gave him rides home every day from school (the advantages of being older!) and we ate lunch, went out to dinner
and spent time together with our mutual friends.
A few weeks into the school year, Andrew asked me to the Homecoming dance. It was the sweetest thing! He was late to band (our 1st hour) one morning and came flying into the room just as we were getting ready to go outside. He shoved (almost) a rose and a card into my hands and then ran over to his locker with out saying a word. I stood there speechless for a moment, not doing anything. A couple of my good friends were standing around laughing at me, and told me to read the card. I was surprised! I though he was just wanting me to hold it for him while he put his stuff away and I thought he was going to give it to another girl! Needless to say, when I opened the card I immediately told him yes. Some weeks later we started dating, and the rest, as they say, is history!
